Huntington Charbray's - Australian Record $28 000
Story & Pictures by Sharon Howard QCL
Smashing the Australian record for a top price sale at an auction, the 35th National Breed Sale will be remembered fondly for many years.
The sale of Huntington Forester for $28 000 rewrote the record books for both the Charbray Society and Taroom based Huntington Charbrays, owned by the Welsh family.
Huntington Charbrays sold the record breaking, 32 month old Stewart Park 72 son to the S. Kidman & Co Charbray bull breeding site at Morney Plains, Windorah. The sale of the impressive C5 sire Forester reinforces the focus of the Charbray Society on genetic excellence in the breed by drawing attention to the worth of an impeccably bred bull.
It was selected by the Helen Springs station manager, Chris Towne, Tennant Creek, NT, who was looking for polled genetics and liked the width of Forester. "He's a good overall type of bull," he said. Forester scored a 12 and 8 in the fat scoring, an eye muscle area of 143sq cm and weighing 1050kg with a 42cm scrotal.
The company bought 14 other bulls to return to the Helen Springs Brahman-Charbray crossbreeding operation that will this year join 4500 Brahman cross heifers to Charbray bulls.
Huntington Charbrays averaged $16 250 for the sale of two bulls.
Jim, Mary and Michael Connolly, Emjay Charbray, Goomeri paid $16 000 for the 33 month old, Colinta Bobby son, Tunas Exception. The sire weighed 1260kg with an EMA of 150sq cm and a fat score of 13 and 9. Catalogued as an out-standing sire prospect with pedigree and performance, Michael Connolly agreed. Bone, depth, length and softness were traits in the bull he identified. The sire will join a 120-head stud herd.
Paul and Georgie Connor, Rosewood Charbrays, Morinish sold the 21-month old, Rosewood Freak for $15 000 to George and Cathy Hoare, Braylyn Charbray Stud, Bluff. Rosewood Charbrays averaged $9333 for 3 bulls.
The Hoare family sold Braylyn Geronimo, a polled, Colinta Basil son to Kerod and Clare Lindley, Spring Villa Charbrays, Wowan for $13 000 and Braylyn Gravox (P) to Clare Grazing, Clare, Theodore for $11 000, Braylyn averaged $9875 for their 4 lots.
Les and Anne Marshall, Greenfields Charbrays, Jambin, topped the offering at $9500 when Darnelle Grazing Co, Ridgelands bought Greenfields Freeman.
T & L Ford, Wattlebray Charbrays, sold eight bulls to average $5437 including the $9000 sale of a 26-month-old Huntington Dinky Dye son to Peter Mayne and family, Goathlands, Springsure.
Bruce and Sue Mikkelsen, Wiluna Charbrays, Gin Gin, sold a $9000 bull, Wiluna Flinders to Pat Bredhauer, Lambert, Blackall.

Jambin Charbray attracts $9500
Story & Pictures by Sharon Howard QCL
Les and Anne Marshall, Greenfields Charbray Stud, Jambin have sold a 30 month old, dehorned bull at the National Charbray Sale for $9500 to top the sale. Greenfields Emmet (GRF2E09-297) is sired by Cordelia 313/4 (CB) 2983, out of Greenfield 06-615 (CB) 21527. “He’s the best bull we’ve bred this year and one of the best stud sires we’ve ever bred,” said Les. Buyers, Kandanga Valley Charbray stud principals, John and Roz Mercer couldn’t agree more, commenting, “Emmet epitomises the Charbray stud sire with generations of breeding, tremendous weight for age, nice muscling and a beautifully balanced animal.”
The 2011 sale saw a solid average of $4211 with nearly 25% of bulls selling for more than $5000. Charbray Society president, Matt Welsh, Huntington, Taroom felt the overall quality of the line-up was extremely good, “The vendors are committed to lifting the profile of the sale and continuing to build the sale reputation. This year’s catalogue was consistently high in quality, but the buyers were very selective - they weren’t looking for cheap bulls, they wanted top quality.”
The top selling herd bull, 26 month old, Braylyn Fatso was purchased from George and Cathy Hoare, Rockview, Bluff for $9000 by Andrew and Claire McTaggart, Balcomba, Marlborough. “He’s a structurally correct bull, well equipped in fat cover and with a good temperament,” said Andrew. Fatso will join the McTaggart’s bull breeding herd. “I buy more on the principles of the principals, rather than the genetics in the bull,” explained Andrew, “I’ve been coming to sale for the last 10 years, but I haven’t bought until this year. I didn’t even really come to buy a bull, but this bull really grabbed my attention.”
Trevor and Kym Horrocks, Kimberley Park Charbrays, Wandoan had a particularly strong sale, averaging $6750 for the sale of 4 bulls, including the $8000 sale of the 23 month old, dehorned, Kimberley Park Deputy (AI) (ET) to Errol, Noel and Dan Comeford, Exmoor, Collinsville. Kimberly and Kellie Pickersgill, Geeva, Theodore sold 4 bulls for a $5500 average including 3 bulls to Ian and Sharon Bush, Bush Holdings, Maytoe, Alpha. First time vendor, Ian Clark, 5CS Charbrays, Casino NSW, sold two bulls for an average of $5250. Brian and Sue Mikkelsen, Wiluna Charbrays, Gaeta had a successful sale, averaging $5000 for the sale of 5 bulls and picking up a presale prize from judge, Mark Wilson, Banana Station, Banana for the best presented sale line-up.
Volume buyers, Peter, Straun and Carrie Mayne, Goathlands, Springsure picked up 6 bulls for the average price of $4666 to run with 500 breeders in their commercial herd. The family fatten bullocks on their central Queensland block utilising Droughtmaster and Charbray bulls, securing 2 Droughtmasters at the recent National sale in Rockhampton.
Long term vendor, Les Marshall, Greenfields Charbrays, Jambin summed up the sale, “Overall, this years’ sale was the best presented line of bulls that I’ve seen here in over 20 years. The sale continues to kick on stronger every year.”
Selling for $9500, Greenfields Emmet is pictured with (L to R) buyers Roz and John Mercer, Kandanga Valley Charbray Stud, Kandanga Valley and vendor, Les Marshall, Greenfields Charbray, Jambin.
Topping the Herd bull offering, George Hoare, Rockview Cattle Co, (with his daughter, Ashlyn) sold Braylyn Fatso for $9000 to Andrew and Claire McTaggart, Balcomba, Marlborough.

Charbrays dominate carcase comps
By PENELOPE ARTHUR
Charbray breeders have continued to dominate carcase competitions across Queensland over the past 12 months, notching up big wins in some hotly contested classes.
At the Central Queensland Carcase Classic at Rockhampton in July this year, David and Elizabeth Hill’s pen of three Charbray heifers won Champion Pen of Grainfed Trade Heifers (Class 6) before going on to be named Champion Grainfed Pen.
Fellow Charbray breeders Tim and Lynette Olive won Champion Pen of Grainfed Steers with three Charbray steers before picking up Reserve Champion Grainfed Pen.
This Charbray double delight was backed up with some other notable placings by Charbray breeders including a second place in Class 5 – Single Grainfed Steer (max 4 teeth, 300 - 420 kg carcase).
Morinish Charbray breeder Georgie Connor is the Secretary for the Central Queensland Carcase Classic and said it was wonderful to see fellow Charbray breeders perform well in the competition.
“With $23,000 in prize money up for grabs, this carcase competition is very strongly contested and is a real test of how breeds stack up against each other,” she said.
“The Charbray’s are performing well and even winning some very competitive classes which is fantastic to see.”
“It just reinforces the fact that the modern Charbray has the fat cover and the meat traits to win these highly prestigious carcase competitions.”
At the Mackay Carcase Classic, also held in July this year, Charbray breeders Darren and Sandra Gillham of Lake Elphinstone Partnership at Nebo were named Most Successful Exhibitor thanks to their Charbray entries. The now seasoned carcase competitors collected a host of placings at the Mackay event including Grand Champion Pen of Grainfed Steers, second in Grainfed Carcass (most suited to the domestic market) and second in the Pasture Fed Chiller Bullock class.
The Gillham’s also placed third in Pen of Two Grassfed steers (carcase weight 285 - 420kg) as well as the aggregate prize for this class and third place in the Grainfed Chiller Bullock Class. Mr Gillham believes it is the ability of Charbray cattle to finish well that catches the attention of competition judges.
“We also did well at the Nebo Show Carcase Competition this year where we won Grand Champion Pen of Grainfed Steers and first and second in the Grainfed Local Trade Class with our Charbray’s,” he said.
“We’ve been competing at the Mackay Show for about seven years now and have picked up a ribbon here and there but have never really been successful like we did this year.”
“Our Charbray’s have just improved in quality each year.”
“We enjoy participating in the carcase competitions because we like seeing how other people’s cattle present and how our Charbrays stack up against them.”
Dysart Charbray breeder Ted Murphy, Tayglen Pastoral Company, has been competing in carcase competitions at his local Mackay and Clermont shows since 1995. He’s brought a swag of ribbons back home to Dysart including Most Successful Exhibitor at the 2010 Mackay Carcase Competition and first place in the Feature Class Pen of Three Steers at this year’s Mackay event.
“We’ve also enjoyed winning numerous placings in the hoof competition in Clermont this year where we placed third in overall points with our Charbray cattle,” he said.
“We also won the Cattleman’s Challenge at the Clermont Show last year with our Charbrays.”
“This event follows the cattle through from the paddock to plate with a final taste testing competition on the day of the show.”
Springsure’s Mick Nobbs, Mount Vexation, has sought to test the quality his cattle at store and carcase competitions in Emerald and Springsure for many years. Mr Nobbs runs 1500 Brahman and Charbray breeders on his 17,000ha home property, Mount Vexation, 160km southwest of Springsure. Some of his most notable achievements including winning Champion Pen of Store Steers and Reserve Pen of Store Steers at Beef 2000.
“That year at Beef we were named the Most Successful Exhibitor,” Mr Nobbs said.
“We’ve also won a few local shows such as Springsure and AgGrow at Emerald.”
“This year at Emerald we won third in the steer competition and second in the heifers with our Charbray weaners.”

Primex, Casino 11-13 June 2009
What a success! It was unbelievable as to the amount of interest in the Charbray breed. On display we had Bodman and his mother Rachel (fresh out of the paddock blooming, heavily in calf), Cobon (a 75:25 CC:BB Bull) and Caleeta (a 25:75 heifer- who incidentally won the Junior Champion All Breeds Heifer).
Bodman drew the crowd with his sheer size and appeal, with comments being made by cattlemen “We didn’t know Charbray’s could be this good”, positively challenging traditional thoughts on the Charbray, and creating a lot of interest in generational breeding.
Congratulations must go to Ian and Colleen Clark of ‘5 C’s Charbrays’, Casino for achieving 3rd place in the site competition. Ian and Colleen, along with other New South Wales Charbray studs had a wonderful display of photos and material to help promote our breed.
Thank you Ian and Colleen for inviting Newcombe’s Charbrays to Primex and for your tireless efforts in presenting a fantastic site to promote the Charbray breed.
Visit us and "Bodman" and "Dawson's" new owners, Samari Charbrays, Roma at AgShow, Toowoomba on September 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Site MS 565 & 566 in the M & S Cattle pavilion.
