Charbray Association Australia

The Hec Maynard Memorial Trophy of Excellence

Hec Maynard is the Charbray Society of Australia's founding President whose passion for the breed has steered us to where we are today.

This awards namesake, Ronald Francis Maynard (OAM), known as Hec, a popular Central Queensland grazing and community identity who was instrumental in establishing the Charbray breed in Australia in the early 1970s. As the Charbray Society's founding president Hec's passion for the breed was instrumental in steering it to where we are today. The trophy is a bronze cast of one of Hec's old work hats, with part of its wooden base crafted from timber found on his property Greenfields. This prestigious annual trophy is selected by nomination from fellow members.

The winning nomination that was submitted by a fellow member for consideration.

Trevor & Lolita Ford, Wattlebray Charbrays
It’s been a big year for Trevor and Lolita starting at our meet and greet with them being a number of studs donating semen for the Society’s semen auction with their package reaching $520 per straw.

Then following up at the 45th National sale, Breaking the breed record twice finishing up with Wattlebray Ringer(P) reaching $52 500, which is a terrific achievement for them and the Charbray breed.

With Trevor putting in a large contribution on the Young Beef Breeders Bash committee, breaking in a large number of cattle ensuring there were enough cattle for the participants to handle and passing his knowledge on to the next generation of breeders, also the numerous that they attend with their cattle which is a great advisement for the Breed.
Trevor has been Chairman of the National sale committee for a number of years, then like a number of council members getting in their cars and doing a catalogue drop and looking for the perfect tree to place our sale signs.
The Society is very blessed to have devoted members like them contributing to the breed.

2022 Hec Maynard Memorial Trophy of Excellence

2019 Hec Maynard Memorial Trophy of Excellence

Paul Connor, Rosewood Charbrays

Paul has developed an excellent herd of Charbray cattle on his Morinish run, Rosewood, on the famed Fitzroy River west of Rockhampton. Paul’s sagacity as a cattleman has been well and truly exhibited over the years in the bulls, he has presented at the Charbray Annual Sale at CQLX; so much so, in fact, that he is the record holder for the highest priced “Bull at Auction”, that being $40,000.

Rosewood Cattle Company has also exhibited a show team at various local shows in years gone by. As those of us who have had show teams in the past know, it is no mean feat to keep up to scratch with the show cattle, prepare sale bulls and manage the property as well.

Paul organised a Field Day at Rosewood a few years ago. It was very well attended by members of the Charbray Society and others. All present enjoyed viewing the display of cattle followed by a steak and a few cleansing ales.
And if all of this was not enough to keep Paul busy, he spent a number of years as a member of the Charbray Society Council. During this time, he did his turn as Society President.

Tough times were had during Paul’s reign, yet this gentlemanly fellow took every obstacle in his stride and saw the ups and downs through. A lesser being would not have coped with the challenges of that period. The Society owes Paul for his exceptional leadership in those worrisome days.

The Elite Heifer Sale which was held at The Great Western Hotel came into being as the brainchild of our esteemed councillor, Paul. This sale has now morphed into The Elite Heifer Lucky Number Draw which is held on the night before the Bull Sale.

When the triennial Beef Expo in Rockhampton is mentioned the name Paul Connor is synonymous with the Charbray Society’s involvement. Paul has made and donated trophies for the Champion Charbray exhibits, provided chairs and tables for the members’ lounge and along with the dedicated few assisted in assembling and dismantling the site. He has also been a diligent steward during the Charbray judging at Beef Expos in the past. This man’s dedication and service to the Charbray breed and Society is reflected by his involvement in the Steer Project. Paul has run, free of charge, steers on his property until they were ready for sale. He has not only collected them from donors but marketed them on the Society’s behalf. From the time they leave the property of origin until sale, Rosewood Cattle Company has met all expenses concerning animal husbandry. The Charbray Society is extremely fortunate to have this dedicated and generous member.

2021 Hec Maynard Memorial Trophy of Excellence

Congratulations Les & Anne Marshall Greenfields Charbrays, the 2021 recipients of the Hec Maynard Memorial Trophy of Excellence. Awarded annually for the pursuit of excellence, dedication and service to the Charbray breed and Society. A prestigious recognition that is put forward by fellow Members. This is an extremely fitting nomination as we celebrate Les serving 20 Years on our Management Council of which he has served 2 terms as President.

Les & Anne are part of the Societies backbone, their commitment and dedication is unwavering, always ready to roll their sleeves up and support the Society, Breed and Members in anyway needed.

Les & Anne Marshall: Greenfield’s Charbrays

If you are looking for a person that pursues excellence, is dedicated and offers unwavering service to the Charbray Breed & Society then you can look no further than Les Marshall and his wife Anne of Greenfields Charbrays at Jambin.

Les’s commitment to the breed and society is unquestionable, currently serving his 20th year on management including 2 terms (7 years) as President.

Flying the flag for the Charbray breed whether it is at Society events, shows, sales or other Beef Industry related functions you can bet Les Marshall is there with the Charbray breeds interest front of mind. Hell, it doesn’t even have to be Beef Industry related and he can work the word Charbray in there somewhere.

One could pick any year and Les and Anne’s name could be in the running for this award. But during 2021 their contribution has been outstanding. Les’s efforts before, during and after the society’s Beef 21 promotion was enormous, from using his connection’s and negotiating a better site position, to the setting up and manning that site, to eventually packing up afterwards. All this effort for the Society as well as having their own cattle on show.
The Society’s major fundraiser in Monto would not have eventuated without him – Les is instrumental each year in getting the sale to eventuate. Getting sponsorship, organising cattle and helping to draft cattle prior to the sale. Being always conscious of us needing a number of cattle at this event, Greenfields has been a vendor since the sales inception.

Les and Anne have never been shy of digging into their pockets for the Society. At the society’s inaugural Elite Heifer giveaway, they did not hesitate to be one of the first to put their hand up to donate a heifer. This is as well as having supported the society’s steer project in the past. This sort of contribution is enormous.

Since the breeds beginnings Greenfields has been heavily involved in one way or another, but over recent years Les & Anne’s dedication to its success has been unwavering. In saying this, one cannot think of a better way of applauding this sort of outstanding commitment than by nominating them for consideration for this year’s Hec Maynard Memorial award.

Hec Maynard Memorial Award Nomination
Being an active member of the Charbray Society of Aust means that we have a real interest in promoting the benefits the breed has to offer the beef breeding industry.

We can go about this in a number of different ways. We all like to promote our own individual studs, the quality of our cattle and how they would be the right genetics for you. While promoting the breed as a whole to the beef industry is what we want, it’s normally a bridge too far for a lot of us. It is easier to leave that to the society’s management.
This couldn’t be further from the case for the family that I would like to nominate for the Hec Maynard Award. For them, just having good quality bulls for the National Sale each year isn’t enough. If there’s a Society event on they are involved, helping wherever possible and if it is not possible, they normally make it possible. Swapping work rosters is never an issue.

From manning sites at field days and other Society events, which to them isn’t just turning up, it is supplying cooking for smoko’s etc, as well as adding to the events attractions with extra promotional ideas. If these events involve supplying cattle they make sure they have some available. Even if it means entering some of your good replacement heifers in a feedlot trial because your cull heifers just weren’t heavy enough at the time.

2018/2019 saw them enter the show ring for the first time with their cattle, enjoying success flying their flag and helping gain exposure around the Central Qld circuit.

But again, what really sets this family apart from the rest is the extra initiatives they come up with to gain maximum exposure for Society events. There is no better example than having Charbray Beef from our society feedlot trail on the menus and in the headlines all over Central Qld. Their initiative, what can we do with all this quality MSA graded Charbray meat. If that wasn’t enough, then certainly entering and taking out Champion Chef in Central Qld’s Battle of the Breeds Cook Off was further icing on the promotional cake. At all times proudly wearing the Charbray cap, again this was just that little bit more that could be done. Our breeds own celebrity chef!!

In summery if promoting the breed is the criteria for the Hec Maynard Memorial award, then it is without hesitation that I nominate….. Glen & Toni Zeimer & Family Cedar Park Charbrays

Bruce is currently an active member of Council although his and Sues commitment to the breed dates back many years. They have embraced the objective of the Society which is to encourage the improvement, exhibition and sale of Charbray cattle.

Bruce's eagerness and dedication to help the Society has never been more evident than with the establishment of the 2016 Inaugural Charbray and Charbray Infused Prime and store Cattle Show & Sale of which Bruce was one of the main drivers.

Bruce quietly worked behind the scenes in insuring this event was successful including securing our hosts Brad & Donna McInally, Monto Cattle & Country, he canvassed participants, sort sponsors, provided sponsorship and cattle for the sale.

This sale not only proved to be a promotional win for Charbray cattle but also provided a financial boost for the Society and has been earmarked to be staged annually.

Below is Chas & Judys winning nomination that was submitted for consideration by fellow members.

2015 Hec Maynard Trophy Winners Chas & Judy Nobbs of Cordelia Charbrays.

Chas and Judy Nobbs would be worthy winners of the Hec Maynard Trophy. Their name has been associated with quality Charbray cattle for decades. They breed both quality stud and commercial animals, which are keenly sort after. They are quiet achievers of our breed that are very dedicated to the Charbray cause. Chas and Judy are very humble people that have a passion and vision for our breed that we could all learn from. The success that they accomplished at Beef 2015 commercial cattle championships was exceptional. The Nobbs family won champion pen of grass-fed females, reserve champion pen of grass-fed females and champion pen of grass-fed steers. Also at Biloela show they received champion steer, champion pen of steers, champion pen of females, champion and reserve champion single female. They also claimed champion female carcase at the Callide Dawson valley carcase competition. With these results and the promotion that Charbray cattle receive from this I believe that Chas and Judy should be thanked for their contribution by receiving the Hec Maynard Trophy.

Announcing the recipient of the 2014 Hec Maynard Memorial Trophy of Excellence

Mr Kerod Lindley, Spring-Villa Charbrays

Kerods dedication and service combined with his passion and vision for our breed and the Society without doubt show's he is a very deserving recipient. Congratulations Kerod! Below is Kerods winning nomination that was submitted for consideration by fellow members.

Kerod is currently an active member of Council although his association with the breed dates back many years. This includes previous terms on Council. During this time Kerod has promoted the breed and the Society both commercially and to its member base. The struggle to keep the Society office and herd book not just going but growing has been at the fore front of his intentions. Proof of this is his willingness to dip into his own pocket for breed promotion as well as genetics.

Kerods generosity includes the building and funding of a Billboard in consultation with Council, then going the extra step to set up a fund to help establish more of this promotion. This fund includes offering members access to his genetics for donations back to Society for this cause. He has also being the driving force behind the Society's steer project, making several personal donations over the years for the betterment of the Society.

Kerods eagerness and dedication to help the Society has never been more evident than at Beef Expo's. He was hands on in bringing together the Societies commitment to support the school teams judging at this major tri-annual event. His efforts in setting up the Societies site and manning it are certainly noticeable.

The Charbray breed is finally moving ahead under the vision of this award's figurehead, Mr Hec Maynard. The effort and passion that Kerod exerts in this area proves he certainly shares that vision and is very deserving of this award.
